I support Barrie’s future and recognize that our city will continue to change. I believe growth should be judged by whether it makes Barrie stronger—not simply by population totals, development activity or additional revenue.
What Responsible Growth Means
I don’t believe growth should be treated as an end in itself. Population growth and development revenue are not, on their own, sufficient measures of success. We should also consider how growth affects daily life, municipal services, affordability and the infrastructure residents rely on.
Infrastructure Before Problems Become Crises
Before significant new pressure is added, I want the City to consider whether roads, intersections, water and wastewater systems, stormwater infrastructure, sidewalks, parks, transportation and other core municipal assets are ready or properly planned.
I believe predictable bottlenecks and existing weaknesses should be identified early. Dealing with them before they become larger is generally less costly and less disruptive than waiting for growth to compound the problem.
Growth Should Strengthen Barrie
Growth can create real opportunity when it is planned responsibly. It should improve Barrie’s foundations and support a strong community rather than becoming a goal measured only by how much is built or how much new revenue is collected.
Municipal growth should also not automatically mean unnecessarily expanding the size or cost of government. Priorities, capacity and long-term operating costs should be considered as decisions are made.
Planning for Existing and Future Residents
I believe growth decisions should consider both the people arriving in Barrie and the people who already live here. New areas need proper services, while established neighbourhoods and existing infrastructure must continue to receive attention and investment.
I believe growth should make Barrie stronger, not simply bigger.
